My best guess on the roadmap for iOS, OS X (and its successor), the iPhone 5, and the iPad 3 & 4… Also, check out my take on the iPhone 4S announcement.
Note: I’ve identified the “iPhone 5” and “iPhone 6” respectively in 2012 and 2013, but I’ll clarify that I don’t think that Apple will specifically name the iPhones according to that strategy. Rather, in these cases I’m referring to the iPhone’s 5th release, and 6th release (which may actually be the iPhone 6 and 6S).
Similarly, while I do believe the next iPad will actually be called the iPad 3, I’m not entirely convinced that the 4th model will be iPad 4. This is due, in part, to what I think will be a merger of iOS and OS X in 2013, and the iPad 4 may in fact be a wholly new product, bridging the iOS and OS X worlds.
Possible confirmation #1: This is the first relatively specific report I’ve read, confirming at least the first part of my timeline estimates: http://9to5mac.com/2011/12/11/report-next-ipads-to-arrive-in-3-4-months-parts-being-delivered-now/ (although, most people will say that these estimates are pretty solid on the grounds that 2009 and 2010 had basically the same pattern. But 9-to-5 Mac is reporting actual design elements (parts are apparently shipping), and a release of 3 to 4 months, putting the potentially legit design rumors into mid-December as I’d guessed, and a shipping date in March or April, as shown above. Nothing spectacular, but definitely an indication that the trend is continuing.
Looks like I’m a month late on the iPad and iOS 5.1 release… both available today, with iPad shipping on the 16th.
